Dr. Obara was born and raised in Hawai’i Kai. His love for animals began by making saltwater habitats with the fish he caught in Sandy Beach's tide pools and those he “saved” from his mom’s fishing cooler. Little did his parents know that this love of animals would soon turn their home into a zoo. He would also volunteer at various veterinary clinics, the Hawai’i Humane Society, Honolulu Zoo and Sea Life Park.
His educational background includes being a son of ‘Iolani School and a student at THE Colorado State University. He graduated from CSU Honor’s Program in 2001 with a degree in Animal Sciences. In 2005 he graduated from CSU with his doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Returning home, he began working at Kalihi Pet Clinic in Moili'ili under Dr. Timothy Lau who opened the original location at the old Kalihi Shopping Center in 1962. Upon Dr. Lau's retirement in 2013, Dr. Obara became the primary care doctor and took over the practice.
In his free time Dr. Obara loves to harass Mochi, his cat; talk story with dogs, Elway and Von at the beach….and spend time with his wife (not in this order). He is an avid University of Hawai’i sports and Denver Broncos fan. He also loves yoga, playing basketball, volleyball, being a foodie and a lover of many hiking trails and beaches.
